Russia offers renewal to Cherchesov before crucial match against Belgium

The Russian Football Union (UFR) announced Friday that it has offered renewal to the national coach, Stanislav Cherchesov, who led the team to the quarterfinals in the last World Cup played in this country and he has qualified for Euro 2020.

“In view of the results we must make a proposal. But not only because of the results, but because it is the right thing. We did it and Stanislav Salámovich (Cherchesov’s patronymic) is studying it,” said Alexandr Diukov, president of the UFR, The local press.

Diukov stressed that Cherchesov, who took office in August 2016, achieved the minimum goal set, which was to qualify the team for the European Championship.

The UFR made public the proposal on the eve of the crucial match against Belgium in St. Petersburg, which will decide who will lead the group I.

At the moment, the Belgium of Real Madrid’s Eden Hazard leads the classification of Group I with a full eight wins in so many games (24 points), while the Russians add 21 points, since they fell in Brussels (3-1).

To finish the qualifying phase the Russians must win by three goals of difference and then achieve victory on Tuesday in San Marino.

Cherchesov was heavily criticized in the first two years in office, criticism that became flattering after eliminating Spain’s penalty shootout in the round of 16 of the World Cup in Russia.

Since then, the Russian press is unanimous in its support for the management of the coach, who has managed to create a solid block without fissures or large individualities.
